First there was Black Friday. Then there was Cyber Monday. Now, we have Giving Tuesday.
Tuesday, November 29th is GivingTuesday, a day for businesses, individuals, groups and charities to join together to rally for favourite causes, create opportunities and share meaningful experiences. Whether it’s raising awareness, volunteering or fundraising, GivingTuesday is our day to celebrate the importance and impact of giving back.
Just as Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season, GivingTuesday marks the start of the giving season. What started four years ago in New York is now becoming a global movement that has reached 68 countries. In 2014, Vancouver, Regina, Guelph, Ottawa, and Halifax launched their charitable campaigns. The GivingTuesday Waterloo Region movement began in 2015.
This year, Central joined the Giving Tuesday movement. Our efforts will support our mission at Rachel’s Children’s Home in Maputsoe, Lesotho.
Rachel’s Home is an orphanage and elementary school, caring for the child victims of Lesotho’s AIDS epidemic. Lesotho is one of the poorest countries on earth. It has been ravaged by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and many other diseases. One in four children under the age of 16 are orphans and life expectancy is in the low forties. With little or no public supports, orphan children struggle to survive.
About 13 years ago, Hilda & Godwill Seforo, found a baby girl abandoned at their front door. They took the child in, named her Joy, and raised her as their own. It didn’t take long for word to get around, and before long they found other young children abandoned at their front door. This was the birth of Rachel’s Home. It’s a story that’s repeated time and time again throughout the Third World. A couple takes in a child and then another and another and before long, another local orphanage is born. With just a little support from people like us, these people can work miracles in their own communities. Through their strength of faith and conviction, their boundless energy and perseverance, and their incredible ingenuity in the face of challenges, they make an incredible difference in the lives of the children in their care.
Central has been sharing that journey with Hilda & Godwill for 10 years and we continue to support their efforts. You too can help. On Giving Tuesday, make a donation, and pass the word. You can take an unselfie and tweet it using the hashtags #UNSelfie, #GivingTuesdayWR and #StayGenerous
