So, what is the real meaning of Christmas?
Every year, throughout the World, people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Catholic and Protestant churches celebrate Christmas on December 25th, while Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7th.
Regardless, Christmas is a time filled with carols and decorations, gift-giving and parties. But are the parties and gifts and trees really what Christmas is about? Why do we have these Christmas traditions? Is there more to Christmas than just this?
What is the real meaning of Christmas?
Let’s face it, the World is a mess. The struggles are real and the pain is real. How could the story of a baby, born in a stable, to a poor young couple, half a world away, 2000 years ago, possibly have anything to do with this?
The answer is in the baby’s identity and what he brought with him into this World. That baby was Jesus and he brought with him the good news of Christmas that, even amid the chaos, God’s love remains constant. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ, and it is good news that will be for all people. That message doesn’t change!
Christmas is a story of faith.
A very young woman, a virgin, is visited by an angel. The angel tells her that she will become pregnant and bear a son, the son of God. She, and her fiancé, despite all of the evidence to the contrary, accept this crazy story and live it through faith.
This event shaped their lives, in often very painful ways, but they accepted everything that came their way. And they raised the son of God to be a savior to all who believe.
It’s not an easy story. It’s not a painless story. But it’s a wonderful story; it’s an amazing story; it’s a love story and it is good news, the good news that we share every Christmas and throughout the year.
Christmas is also a story of love.
“For God so loved the World, that he gave his only son, that whosoever believes shall not perish. They shall have eternal life”
