Election of Elders

Our congregation is growing and we are in need of some additional elders to visit in districts.  In the Presbyterian Church in Canada, elders are nominated and elected by the congregation.  Any member of the church who attends regularly is eligible for nomination.  There is a nomination paper in this bulletin.  Please give some prayerful thought to nominating people whom you think would make good leaders in our congregation.  Nominations will be accepted until May 2, 2010.

PASTORAL VISITORS

We have a very dedicated team of people who assist the elders in visiting people in our congregation and distributing the communion invitations four times per year.  If you enjoy visiting with others, please give some thought to volunteering as a pastoral visitor.  There will be a training session and each pastoral visitor will have an elder who is available to provide assistance when needed.   If you are interested, please give your name to Aubrey or to any elder.

NOTES FROM APRIL SESSION MEETING

  • Elder Election: Our congregation is growing and the session is calling for the election of up to five additional elders.   Elders have three roles: attending monthly Session meetings, serving on a session committee and providing pastoral care and visiting for approximately 6-8 households in our congregation.  Elders are nominated and elected by the congregation.  Nominations will be accepted from April 18 to May 2 and the election will be held later in May.
  • Pastoral Visitors: We have a dedicated group of volunteers who assist the elders in visiting people and distributing communion invitations four times per year.  If you enjoy visiting, please consider volunteering as a pastoral visitor.  You can give your name to Aubrey or to any elder.
  • Mighty Meals: Tanya Pickard made a presentation to the session about an exciting new program she called "Mighty Meals" where a small group of people use  quantity cooking techniques to prepare a large number of healthy, tasty meals in a short period of time.  These meals will then be available for purchase or to distribute to people in need as a ministry of this congregation.  The Session approved trying this program and Tanya has volunteered to be the first leader.  More details will follow in the next few weeks.
  • Moderator of the General Assembly: The Rev. Dr. Herb Gale of the Presbytery of Waterloo Wellington has been elected the next Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
  • Waterloo Region Hall of Fame: James Barrie, a lifelong member of Central Church and our longest serving elder (he was elected in 1954) will be inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame on Sunday May 16 at 2 pm at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Kitchener.   Others being inducted that day include Raffi Armenian, Derrick Campbell and Doug Consiglio.  Everyone is invited to attend.

Last year our Presbytery was part of the Presbyterian World Service and Development One Gift Campaign. We raised money to give 1650 girls, ages 5 to 12, the opportunity for education. On Tuesday, April 20th, from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m., come and learn more about this project. We meet in the lounge at Calvin Presbyterian Church, Kitchener, 248 Westmount Road East. We will also learn about other projects in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and how PWS&D supports them. Our speakers will be Shama Mall, a PWS&D partner representative, and Guy Smagghe, the Asia Program coordinator for PWS&D. Contact: Mark Gedcke 519-744-4061
